About Us!?

Why our blog title?

Why name our blog “Why aren’t we turning left?”? Well, back in 2008, Jamie and I left our respective jobs and went on our first long travelling adventure together. We travelled for four months and a half to tour America in a small hired van in Oregon. With just a bed at the back of the driver’s and passenger’s seat, it was very cosy!

Our small Peugeot boxer parked in Death Valley, Nevada.
During our journey, we had a few arguments. Jamie geniusly turned these arguments into little songs to try to flip them around and make me laugh – it did work and some of them became our “catch phrases” – that’s how we ended up with “Why aren’t we turning left?”, the actual song/phrase has “Jam’” at the end of it so it reads “Why aren’t we turning left, Jam’? – I call Jamie “Jam’” or “Jamo”.

Why Europe?

Once we’d got back from the trip we knew we wanted to go out again one day, but this time for longer. I think Jamie never stopped thinking and researching from then on what and how we would do it. We also thought that we would go across Europe as we both hadn’t really explored anything on our doorstep. America’s so big that it really made us think about distances and how far people travel. What we, Europeans, see as “a long trip” when going from say London to Leeds or further up to Glasgow, Americans would see it as a small journey. They can travel 1000 miles over a weekend or even more. All these countries on our doorstep and we’d barely discovered any, we’d be foolish not to explore what’s just around our corner.

  1. Hi guys, I tripped over your blog when researching what vehicle to motor home around the ‘Stans’ in. I think your posts are great and you had a great adventure.
1 question - would you recommend having a 4 x 4? Almost everyone says yes, but it looks like your van could have just been front wheel drive?
I understand your busy people, but a short reply would be very appreciated.
    Thanks
    Matt
